Sensitivity of detection and reduction of hands-on time are key challenges in molecular diagnostics of bloodstream infections. Current methods are time-consuming and technically challenging to target DNA. Frequently these specimens contain high levels of human DNA, which may interfere with pathogen DNA assays. Culture-based approaches of detection take critical time and utilize multiple prices of equipment. Molzym introduces selectNA™, the first automated system to improve the isolation of DNA from pathogens and identify the correct organism and patient treatment.
Up to a 40,000-fold increase in assay sensitivity
selectNA™ is the first automated platform worldwide, enabling the ultra-sensitive PCR detection of pathogens in whole blood by specific isolation of DNA targets – with a minimum of hands-on time. Based on the pathogen DNA-specific MolYsis proprietary technology, selectNA™ allows for up to 40,000-fold better assay sensitivity as compared to standard DNA isolation protocols.
Detection of DNA from viable pathogens
In addition to the unparalleled sensitivity, patent-protected selectNA™ is the first platform allowing for the specific isolation of cell wall-protected (“viable”) DNA. While free floating (“dead”) microbial DNA is degraded, selectNA™ enables for many applications important for diagnostics, including therapy monitoring. selectNA™ currently is the only DNA isolation technology worldwide allowing for culture-independent detection of viable microbes, including those not growing because of inhibition by antibiotics (culture-negative infections).
A complement to current downstream assays
The patented unique DNA contamination-free liquid handling technology, selectNA™, uses pre-filled cartridges enabling the targeted isolation of pure pathogen DNA from whole blood. This qualifies the system for ambitious applications using universal microbe identification and downstream applications including microarrays, Real-Time PCR, sequencing, and mass-spectrometry.
The automated selectNA™ pathogen DNA isolation system may be combined with any molecular pathogen assays, e.g. SepsiTest™ (Molzym) as well as MRSA assays from various suppliers allowing for direct, culture-independent microbe identification and resistance determination, respectively.
